First Ride of the Year
Our Local HOG chapter, Huron River, in conjunction with Roeder HD sponsored a "Polar Bear" ride on Saturday March 14, 2009. My brother Dave, aka riding freak! Talked me into going on the ride. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to do the ride, just not in 20 degree weather! I committed as all good riding buddies do, and started mentally preparing myself for the ride.
I have never been afraid of the cold, wet or other un-comforts, but as I get older it's harder to take them on. I know I have the gear to keep warm, but.... WILL IT STILL FIT!
I woke up at 7am and the temp was 24 degrees, got myself ready, secretly hoping Dave would not show up, but at 8am, right on cue, I hear the familiar sound of his bike headed towards the house. I had done nothing to get the bike ready so it took another 30 minutes to get it and me ready to ride. (I nearly had to lay down on the lawn and have Dave zip my leathers up as I think they shrunk over winter, but knew the neighbors were already talking about me!)
By the time we took off it was around 28, 29 degree's. The ride was great, road was friendly, and smiles were warm. Had a perfect day, and when I get the pictures from Dave I’ll post them. My camera took a crap on me.
Dave and I were extended the honor of helping out with road captain duties. These duties consist of riding at the head of the pack and blocking off intersections so the pack can pass with no stops! There were over 140 bikes on the ride so it was very cool stopping traffic for several cycles of the light. Everyone that had to wait for us were happy to see us out there enjoying our passion! I think….
I even donated blood for the first time in nearly 20 years! It was a great feeling knowing I was doing something fun and helping someone out. They were giving a cool tee shirt to the first 30 people that donated. I was close the to 30 number so had to push a sweet little old lady out of my way so I was in front of her. I don’t thinks she minded, as she gabbed my ear off the whole time we were in there. As a side note, by BB was 152 over 98! Not good been that high for around a year now, know what that means, off to the Dr.’s then more exercise and better diet! I’ll keep you posted on how that works out!
After donating we stopped in Shifters’ to see what was going on. They have remoddles it and will be open to the public in the next few weeks. On the menu was a 16 oz strip steake for $7.99! No brainer here! Dave and I both ordered one and they were cooked to perfection! BUT, when the bill came out the price had increased to $15.99! Regretted offering to buy lunch! Not really, Dave had fronted me $20.00 early in the day for coffee at the Shamrock so I owned him. Speaking of the Shamrock, when we were waling in this lady asked if Dave would take her picture with me! It was Mrs. Schnellinger, she taught my girls at St. Paul. All she asked was we not “post” the picture. Dave’s going to get me the picture so I can post it here!
After the heavy lunch I blasted off for home, left Dave behind to socialize, that boy need to brush up on his social skills! Never seen anyone talk to so many people as him! The ride was great, I even had a sweet young girl flirt with me at a stop light. Course it was my hair cutting gal Tonya! But she is so pretty that it made me blush, damn near fell off the bike! I wrote it down in my riding notes for memories later on!
Need to fix the Speedo, rear speakers, and get it over to my mechanic so he can check out the cam gears, oil pump and whatever else it needs. Then off to a good deep cleaning and ready for the season.
As they say.... Screw it! Let's Ride!

Work on the 79 FLH
I have had a problem with the gas tanks on the 79 for the past 2 years; the liner has come loose and has plugged everything up. I have talked to several people and the best suggestion has been to put gravel in the tank, wrap it up with many towels and duck tape then run it in the dryer, cool cycle for 30 minutes! Kim is not happy about this but I'm going to give it a try. Phot's and resaults to follow.

Sorry, have to do something until it's warm enough to ride!
The commentary below is an insightful analysis of how Iran is responding to President Obama’s clear signals as to what his Iran policy will be. One week ago Iran launched a domestically manufactured satellite on a ballistic missile that has a range of up to 3,000 kilometers. In other words, Iran has demonstrated it has the capability to launch conventional and nuclear warheads with a range of as much as 3,000 kilometers. During the presidential campaign, at times candidate Barack Obama made it clear that a nuclear Iran was “unacceptable.” But these statements were wrapped in his broader foreign policy theme – that it was time for the U.S. to change course and diplomatically engage countries like Iran. Anyone who even remotely appreciates the horrors of war hopes that diplomatic efforts and/or various non-military sanctions will be successful in “persuading” Iran to abort its nuclear weapons program. But let’s be realistic here. There is little evidence that existing sanctions have had any impact in changing the Iranian government’s behavior. The Islamist regime continues to move full-speed ahead toward the acquisition of nuclear weaponry. As Iran moves ever closer to achieving this goal, will the Obama administration be willing to do what is necessary to prevent a nuclear Iran, what Obama has termed “unacceptable”?

Riding Schedule
The list to the right is going to be the index for 5 major rides I plan on taking this year with my wonderful wife Kim and anyone else that cares to tak along. I came across these rides from a book my daughters got me for Christmas. It has a bunch of rides all in Ohio. List all the history and special things to visit.
When the riding season gets a little closer we will be posting dates for the rides, most of them are only around 200 miles so should be able to do them in one day, with the exception of the ride to Cincinnati, this ride is to go see my daughter Megan!

She's Still There
Well, I took a quick look at the Ultra today and she was happy to see me! I think she wants to ride as bad as I do.
I've put a few things together that needs to be done, like new brakes on the rear, light issues on the tour pak and something else I've forgotten. Looks like it's time to get started, I have a heater in the garage so weather is not the issue!
Maybe tonight......

I’ve decided to do a yearlong log on my riding experiences. This is not to say I ride a lot of miles, however I do ride a lot! I own my own insurance agency, a small shop with just me and my wife running it.
I ride a 1999 HD Ultra, with a 1979 FLH sitting in the shed waiting to be restored. I’ve always said that “when I’ve made it” I’m going to bring the 79 back to its original state as close as possible. Needless to say, I’ve not “made” it as of yet, but I’m only 51 years old, got plenty of time.
I love to ride, my wife loves to ride with me, the only problem we have is Rio, she is our 6 year old mutt, weighs in around 40lbs and we just haven’t found a good spot for her on the bike. Still working on it and I’m sure we will some day.
So here it goes, my Ultra is sitting in the garage with the battery tender plugged in. I have a complete detail scheduled for later in the spring and only a few things I would like to do to it. I will update this blog on what I have done, when and how I did it and then when it’s time to ride.
My favorite saying – Were burning daylight! With Harleys new saying, “screw it, let’s ride” I’m all ready to go.
Power to the people, the people want peace!
